Time was that trading in storage containers was straight forward.? Like many, we came into the business from the freight industry, knowing our way around containers and where we could buy the from when the shipping lines were finished with them.? It was all nice and straight forward.? Shipping lines bought lots of containers every year to use for cargo and they depreciated them every year until they had a low book value then when they arrived somewhere where there was a demand – they sold them.? There was a small market for secure site storage.? Then of course, people started making things with them, like anti-vandal cabins and later on self-storage using shipping containers came along.? In the meantime, the quality of containers increased dramatically and the storage and site services users demanded higher quality and there were some manufacturers that were only too happy to oblige and manufactured containers. The upshot is that there is a real mix of containers in the storage and site services market and those in the container resale business have to keep a sharp eye on how things are changing.

We now buy containers from shipping lines and?manufacturers as well as buying them back from customers and also buying from auction sites.?Types of containers have changed and expanded too.? As well as the 20ft, we can get up to the 48ft., reefers, half-heights, open tops, refrigerated, flatracks and others.

Many people mistakenly think that residential storage containers are only useful for those who are moving. On the contrary, storage units can be used year-round and come in handy when you least expect it. All homeowners alike can agree?there?s always a need for more room.

Here are 3 unique storage container uses you probably didn?t think of.

Outdoor Furniture Storage

In order to increase the lifetime of your outdoor furniture, it?s recommended that it be stored away during parts of the year and protected from harsher weather. While Phoenix storage containers may not have to protect your furniture from the snow, Monsoon season can wreak havoc on your outdoor furniture, and our scorching summer heat can have damaging effects as well. Let your outdoor furniture last by investing in a storage container.

Nursery Furniture Storage

Having a baby is an exciting time. Parents are often filled with joy as they decorate their nursery with cribs, dressers, play pens, and more. Eventually though, that newborn will grow out of the nursery furniture in their room. Parents who plan to have more children are often reluctant to sell or give their nursery furniture away, and rightfully so. With a storage container, you can keep your nursery furniture safe and out of sight until another baby comes along. This investment saves you more money than you think.

Home Remodeling Storage

Remodeling your home always seems like a great idea until you?re halfway through your first paint job and asking yourself, ?Where do I put my stuff while this dries?? Instead of turning your home into a complex obstacle course, place your furniture in a storage container rental. Your furniture will remain paint, scratch, and dent-free while you work on your dream home. Once you?re done, just return the container.

We find that at least 50% of all of the new containers purchased for resale have “lock boxes”. Simply put, this is a box that is welded onto the edge of the right door of the container which, when the door is closed, covers a hasp which is welded to the left hand door. This allows you to lock the hasp within the box with a padlock that is now unaccessible to the jaws of a bolt cutter, hack saw, or cutoff wheel. Generally speaking, it’s been our experience at AZ Containers that lock boxes added are just one of the many modifications we can add at our yards prior to delivery. Fireproof steel strongboxes provide increased protection for the container’s contents. Alarm system:For additional security, a monitored alarm system can alert authorities to a potential break-in.

What we?re referring to are the handles used to open the container. They will typically be at one of two heights. We’ve found that containers built specifically to be used for one trip (from Asia to the US) and then resold once unloaded will have “high” locking gear. Conversely, storage containers built specifically for shipping lines to be used for 10 or more years both on ships and tractor trailers, will have “low” locking gear. I can only surmise that the reason for this is that a container with “high” locking gear is more difficult to open when it is on the chassis of a trailer as the handles are high up off the ground. If you’re buying a container to use for ground level storage, high locking gear is preferable as you don’t have to bend over as far to grab the handles to open the container.

A modern day pioneer is doing some interesting work in Alpine, Texas.?The builder is living off the grid and building an interesting live/work space of storage containers.

A couple years ago, he built a tiny house, which is powered by 270 watts of solar and four 100-watt small wind turbines.?Now, the builder?s current project is the construction of a live/work space made from four 20-foot shipping containers.? He hopes to finish his 1,600 square-foot space for less than $20,000 and has some helpful pointers for others looking to take on a container project.

Here are 10 things to consider if you?re thinking about using storage containers in your next project:

1. Even with all the hype, containers are difficult to obtain and expensive to ship long distances, buy locally. In the state of Arizona, AZ Containers has a location in Phoenix and Flagstaff. They will deliver.

2. Fill out your info on their website for a competitive quote.

3. The price for a 20? shipping container can range from around $2000 and up depending on the condition.

4. Containers provide an extremely secure storage structure which requires a blow torch or dynamite to break into, and they are too heavy to walk off with.

5. AZ Container will delivery by tilt bed roll off truck. A 20? shipping container weighs almost 5,000 lbs.

6. Rust is the only natural predator that can harm a shipping container, so don?t scrimp on a good paint job.

7. These metal monsters become ovens or freezers depending on the outside temperature, really good insulation and ventilation is a MUST! AZ Containers has all types of modifications. Visit https://azcontainers.com/modifications

8. The real bonus to using a storage container is the new green phrase ?adaptive reuse.? Our trade deficit with the rest of the world is causing these to pile up in our country.

9. If you are going to use one for a structure, stay true to the form. Don?t cover the exterior with other building materials ? show it for what it is.

10. While searching the web for how containers are being used, most sites either show computer renderings, and actual completed structures that have also been built. We would recommend consulting an architect for this type of investment.
